Million Dollar Arm
So this weekened I had a difficult choice to make. Godzilla or Million Dollar Arm? I know the first one is supposed to be the big blockbuster everyone was waiting for and for that reason my intention was to go see and review the cool looking Godzilla. But honestly…Jon Hamm…you are just way too irresistible!
So Million Dollar Arm starring the sexy Jon Hamm (Mad Men, The Town, Sucker Punch) as sports agent J.B. tells the true story of this man’s crazy recruitment idea to get Cricket players from India to play for the first time in Major League Baseball.
We start off with the deal of the century going south and J.B. along with his friend/business partner Aash played by Aasif Mandvi (The Internship, Spiderman 2, The Dictator) just on the edge of folding their business in when inspiration strikes in the form of a we-got-nothing-else-to-lose last minute desperate idea. Instead of chasing after all the well-rounded players that everyone else is after why not find potential players from an untapped source? Now Cricket is not too big in America but it is in India and in both sports you got to pitch the ball right? Well in Cricket’s case I think it’s better known as bowl the ball? But same thing. J.B. decides to disguise the tryouts as some type of game show where the fastest pitch gets the prize of one million American dollars! He throws the idea to some fat cat Chang played by Tzi Ma (Rush Hour, Chink, The Champaign) and is able to land the funding for this crazy idea but with the exception that the players he chooses must be ready for the Major Leagues in one year.
It’s off to India where J.B. finds his two players, Dinesh and Rinku played by Madhur Mittal (Slumdog Millionaire, Treasure Island, One 2 Ka 4) and Suraj Sharma (Life of Pi). And then back home again where he along with Aash and coach Tom House played by Bill Paxton (2 Guns, Haywire, Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over) have to race against the clock to get the boys ready for the Major Leagues when scouts from all over will be looking to see if the boys have got what it takes to get signed onto a professional baseball team.
Million Dollar Arm is based on a true story and what a story to be told! Having taken place in back in 2008 in sunny LA you might want to give them a quick google. The real Dinesh and Rinku; super cute! But you’ll see that for yourself at the end of the film when they play actual footage from the outcome of the tryouts.
The main focus of the story is J.B.’s relationship with the boys when they end up staying with him while they train for the event. Oh, not forgetting their translator Amit played by Pitobash (3 Idiots, Shanghai, I Am Kalam) who I found adorably funny!
My only hang up with this film was the length. Which ran a little over 2 hrs. Great story and all but they could have trimmed some of the fat. I think it was at the beginning with all that running around in India because it does take J.B. a while to find Dinesh and Rinku. Oh and there was also the romance between J.B. and Brenda; Lake Bell (No Strings Attached, It’s Complicated, In a World) which wasn’t that bad but I could have done without.
Still, you gotta love it when Disney does a sports movie. They always get it right with the perfect blend of family entertainment and inspiration.
Rotten Tomatoes gave Million Dollar Arm a 60% fresh. My man Jon gets it done!
Rated PG for some mild language and suggestive content.
Great sports movie go see it if you haven’t. However you might want to go to one of those restaurant movie theaters or bring lots of snacks; sometimes those two hours kind of drag.
